09.00 - 12:00 Workshop A: Coastal design and architecture masterclass

Having worked on a host of high rise and super high rise, prestigious commercial and residential towers, as well as luxurious houses, retail centres, hotels and schools, William Yuen has a fantastic amount of knowledge and experience when it comes to the principles and practice of all types of urban design and architecture. He brings to this session an abundance of international experience across the Middle East, as well as in the UK, Turkey, Hong Kong and China. With competing demands for functionality, sustainability, and iconic design there are a number of crucial considerations to be taken as early as the concept feasibility stage, the ramifications of which will impact on all elements of design, construction and ultimately, profitability. Taking examples from his career this session will have William discussing key issues in depth, providing essential knowledge on overcoming the unique challenges posed by the coastal environment.

13.00 - 16:00 Workshop B: Make money, create jobs and save the planet: the real challenges of the design industry

Presented by John Elliott, Senior Vice President at WATG, this workshop will share some of the design lessons learned through his tremendous wealth of experience throughout the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Having worked on landmark projects, such as the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi and Jumeirah Beach Residence in Dubai, John brings to this session world-class knowledge and expertise in creative planning, architecture and design.

Until recently the design industry has used material wilfully, no matter how it was produced. There has been insufficient attention paid to where materials were sourced, how they were distributed and whether they are being used unconscionably. Today this attitude is slowly changing due to an increased awareness of issues and being driven at times by necessity.

By attending this workshop you will be able to delve into the major issues involved in coastal design from a macro to a micro perspective. With an interactive discussion encompassing the critical design decisions taken during the planning stages of a project, including interiors, exteriors and landscaping, John will explain through a combination of principles and practical examples how projects can be designed to better the local community and environment, whilst still remaining profitable.

09.00 - 12:00 Workshop C: Coastal project management masterclass

Coastal developments face a number of challenges which are unique, not only to the coastal environment in general, but to each specific area of coastline. There is a real need to plan and manage these projects very carefully, being prepared for waves, water, regulations, the environment and some very specific engineering problems. Although waterfront developments have the potential to be extremely profitable when done right, they can also be very costly if they are done wrong and the complexities are not properly appreciated.

Led by Jørgen Juhl, Chief Project Manager at COWI, this interactive session will encompass all major elements of managing a coastal project, taking into account master planning, marine engineering, construction methods and environmental monitoring. With experience of managing major COWI projects, including the Pearl of the Gulf, Lusail and currently Al Zorah, he brings to the workshop a wide variety of practical examples from across the region. This essential workshop will provide pragmatic solutions for overcoming or avoiding the key challenges that can occur with coastal construction.

13.00 - 16:00 Workshop D: Geomorphological assessment for Coastal Management

The United Arab Emirates has undergone an incredible rate of coastal development over the past ten years. The region has significant assets in terms of high quality beaches, ecology and its environment, all of which can serve to attract tourists who value such amenities. Much of the coastal development is often allowed without due consideration to the overall potential impacts on the coastal zone at large. There is an important function that coastal geomorphological assessments provide in relation to ascertaining the temporal changes affecting natural and developing coastlines to ensure that new developments are implanted sensitively. Preventing increased adverse erosion and flooding and coastal squeeze are important considerations. The geomorphological assessments can be used to develop strategic planning guidance which can enhance and sensitively manage coastal assets.
